Mathematics

We have been looking at fractions. We looked at a half 1/2 and a quarter 1/4. The children need to be able to split objects or a given number into a half or a quarter. They need to understand the groups need to be equal (same).

Please can you help your child to understand what the numbers represent. They are able to count forwards but we are still struggling to count backwards from a given number.

For example:

12 has 1 stick of ten and 2 ones.

The infamous counting stick is back in Year 1. Show your parents how to use it. Make one out of stick, a ruler or a broom!

This week we are looking at fractions.

We are focusing on one half (1/2) first.

Use the link below. It has activities which you can do on your computer at home.

Please continue supporting your child to count in 2s, 5s, and 10s. Choose one times tables a week for the children to practice. Use objects around your house to show what 2+2+2= actually looks like. Remember it is just repeated addition. The same number being added again and again.

This week we are looking at groups/lots of 2. How many groups of 2 can you make using objects around your house? Use the mathematical language.

Do you know your doubles. What does doubling mean? What happens when you double?

We have noticed some children are 'adding' every calculation. They need to check to see if it is a subtraction or addition. Then use the appropriate methods modelled in class to work them out.
Down below you will be able to read the curriculum which is taught in Year 1. This has been taken from the Direct Gov website.
