Ex-South African President Nelson Mandela dies

by Callum Jones Friday, 6 December 2013

South Africa's first black leader, Nelson Mandela, has died.

The 95-year-old passed away peacefully on Thursday 5 December 2013. After 27 years in jail, Mandela went on to become leader of his country in 1994. The current President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, said his country had "lost its greatest son".

"What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human," President Zuma said. "We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."

Mandela fought against the white leaders of South Africa in the 1950s and 1960s. They put him in prison for almost three decades, until 1990. Four years after he was granted his freedom, the people of the country voted for him to become their President.

Illness

For almost a decade, the former leader tried to stay out of the spotlight. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, and has faced a number of other health issues since. He was taken into hospital in June and has been getting serious medical treatment ever since. The man who many in South Africa call 'Madiba' passed away at home in Johannesburg.

Tributes

American President, Barack Obama, said: "We've lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will spend time with on this Earth. I'm one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela's life. Let us pause and give thanks for the fact that Nelson Mandela lived. May god bless his memory and keep him in peace."

Speaking at premiere for a movie about Mandela's life, Prince William said: "What an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family right now."

"A great light has gone out in the world," UK Prime Minister David Cameron said. "Nelson Mandela was a hero of our time. I've asked for the flag at Number 10 to be flown at half-mast."

Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations global peace organisation, expressed his "deepest admiration and respect to President Mandela".
