Counting on when adding a very efficient method. Do you know what number comes AFTER each number?

Are you fluent? Do you know that if you know 0+10 then 10+0 and 10=0+10 mean the same. Addition is COMMUTATIVE!

After the holidays we are continuing to learn about number bonds to 10.


How many ways can you make 10?

How many sets/lots are there?

In maths next week we will be learning to count in 10s.

What is happening to the tens each time? 

Counting backwards and forwards from any given number up to 50. Do you know 1 more and 1 less without looking at the 100 square? Remember 1 more means going forwards and 1 less is going backwards.

Children need to be able to remember the pairs that add to equal 10.

Do you know how many sides and vertices the 2 Dimensional shapes have?

Please ask your child to write numbers 0-9 daily at home. Most children are still writing them the wrong way around. In order for them to be expected in Year 1 the numbers need to be the correct way around.

During the holidays. I expect children to be adding two 1-digit numbers together up to 10. Children need confidence and it needs to be re-enforced daily at home please. Ask the children what the part-part whole model is. They should explain it to you!

The infamous counting stick is back in Year 1. Show your parents how to use it. Make one out of stick, a ruler or a broom!
