Year 3

Welcome to Year 3!


Here you will find information about what we have been learning in school. You will also find some useful website links that can be used at home. Please check back regularly for updates.


Miss Richards and Miss Murray (Class teachers)


Key information

P.E is on a Tuesday for both classes (3R and 3M). Please remember to bring your P.E kit to school every Tuesday. 

Swimming occurs every other week for both classes. Please refer to the school letter regarding dates for your child's class.


Reading for pleasure books go home daily and reading books will go home every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and need to be in school every day. Reading diaries should be filled out daily with book, page number and a short summary. Class teachers are checking these.


Homework and spellings are set every Thursday and homework should be handed in the following week on Wednesday.


Remember to bring your reading book to school everyday.

WB: 9.5.22


This term in R.E, we are learning about Hindu beliefs. We related Brahman to ourselves and discovered that there are many sides to us, but we are still the same. We made cubes to represent the different sides of us.

This week in science, we have been investigating light. we conducted an experiment to see if we could see what objects in the box with only a few holes in the top. 


We have been learning how to play different musical instruments in music We played some notes along with our year 3 song; three little birds by Bob Marley. After that, we learnt how to play twinkle twinkle little star.

WB: 31.1.22 

This week, in our art lessons, we designed and started making an Egyptian mask.  We have learnt about the different types of masks that the Egyptians use to wear.  For our own design, we have focussed on the famous Tutankhamun's mask.

This week in math, we have been learning about divisibility using lollipop sticks. We discovered that some numbers cannot be shared equally and that the ones that are left over are called a remainder. 

Project (13.1.22)


For our topic this term we are learning all about ancient Egypt. We have been looking at artefacts and even had a go at mummification. 

Science investigation update (13.1.22)


Our seeds have started to germinate after only a few days. We were surprised to see that the seeds that have been left in the dark are also beginning to germinate.

This week in math, we are learning how to multiply and divide by 3,4 and 8. We have had fun understanding how to use arrays to multiply. 


WB 5.1.22

In science, we have been learning all about plants. We set up an investigation to find out what happens if we change some of the conditions that are required to help a plant grow strong and healthy. 


First, we put soil into the pot.

After we put some soil in, we then placed our seeds on top. 

After that, we put some soil on top of the seeds. 

Finally, we watered our seeds.  


We will continue to water our seeds and check how they are growing every week. Remember to check back to see how our plants are growing.

Design and Technology


Making a Torch


In DT, we made a torch using different materials.  We used our knowledge of a series circuit to make a functional torch.  Here are some of our pictures and videos:

We made a switch using split pins, cardboard and paperclips. We tested it out to see if the switch worked.

WB Monday 6th December 2021


Design and Technology 


In Design and Technology, we have learnt about the history of light.  We have looked at different sources of light.   We also learnt about Thomas Edison and about his contribution to the incandescent light bulb.

In DT, we looked at how to make a simple circuit.  Tomorrow we will be adding a switch into our circuits. 


WB 22nd November 2021 


We went on a school trip to the YHA Generation Green.  We built several different shelters using tarpaulins and ropes. We had fun and learnt what it felt like to collect and gather resources, for our shelter, like the people who lived in the Stone Age. 

WB 15th November 2021


During our science lesson, we have been investigating which materials are magnetic and non-magnetic.

We also investigated which magnet is the strongest by attaching paper clips on to the different types of magnets. We were surprised at the results.

Friday 5th November 2021


For our homework, we were ask to make a volcano.   We designed and made volcanoes linked with our geography topic.



Friday 12th November


This week Year 3 have been working extremely hard!



In our English lessons, we have been writing a diary entry.  We have learnt how to write in paragraphs, use time adverbials and conjunctions.  We have also learnt that in a diary entry we add a person's thoughts and feelings.

In maths, we have been adding and subtracting 3-digit and 3-digit numbers.  We have learnt how to exchange 10 ones for 1 ten and exchange 10 tens for 1 hundred. 




In Science, we have been learning all about magnets.  We learnt that magnets have different poles and that they attract or repel.

Thursday 7th October 


For national poetry day, we learnt the ducks ditty poem and learnt how to use our voices clearly, used rhythm, rhyme and actions. 



WB 27th September 2021


We rewrote the story of the Stone Age boy. We had so much fun using interesting vocabulary. 

Week beginning 20th September


For our project this term, we are learning all about the Stone Age. We made some tools at home.


We also made harpoons at school. 


We even became archaeologists.
