School age - when can your child start school?

Reception is the first year of primary school.  It comes after Nursery, but before Year 1.

Children in Birmingham can go to school (Reception) in the September after their 4th birthday.

Example - If your child was born between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020, they will be able to start school in September 2024.

When to apply

Parents can apply for a place in the Autumn of the year before their child turns 4 years of age. It’s important that you apply for a place as soon as possible:

  • attendance at a nursery class doesn’t give a child automatic priority for a place
  • don’t wait until your child is 5 years old, or your preferred school may already be full

You can list up to 3 preferred schools when you apply.

Secondary School Applications

You must submit an online application form by 31 October 2023.

You will receive an email confirmation that you have submitted your application form. Please ensure to check your SPAM or Junk folder.  It is important that you check your confirmation email to make sure everything is correct. You can amend your preferences right up to 11.59 p.m. on the closing date (31 October 2023). Click here for details on how to apply.

Waiting lists will be created three weeks following the offer of school places.  Your child’s name will be automatically added to the waiting list for any higher preference schools than the one offered (unless your child did not achieve a high enough score in the grammar school selection test).  Being on a waiting list does not mean that a place will become available.

Grammar School Admissions

If your child will be sitting the selective test for entry to grammar schools, we strongly recommend that you do not submit your online application until you know the results of your child's grammar school test.  The test results for The Grammar Schools in Birmingham will be available before 31 October 2023.  We are aware that with Grammar Schools in other Local Authorities you may not receive your test scores after the closing date to apply for your preferences (31 October 2023).  However, online applications must be submitted by 31 October 2023 to be classed as on time.  Therefore, please ensure that if you are applying for a Grammar School in another Local Authority you include it as a preference on your application.
