How to apply for a Reception place

Admissions for Reception in September 2020 have now closed. Please click here for more information. The closing date for primary school applications for a place in a Reception Class for September 2020 was: midnight 15 January 2020.

School age - when can your child start school?

Reception is the first year of primary school. It comes after Nursery, but before Year 1.

Children in Birmingham can go to school (Reception) in the September after their 4th birthday.

If your child was born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, they'll be able to start school in September 2020.

National Offer Day 16th April 2020

  • Offers were sent by email on 16 April 2020 by 5:15pm. Please check your SPAM or Junk folder.
  • If you're happy with the school you have been offered, accept this offer by 30 April 2020.
  • Please do not contact Birmingham City Council before you receive the formal notification of your child’s school place. You must be in receipt of your formal notification email before contacting the council.

Accept the place offered?

We strongly encourage you to accept the place offered to your child.

This will not affect your child’s position on any waiting lists for other schools you have not been offered a place at or any appeals you may submit. Accepting the offer will ensure that your child has a school place for September.

Waiting lists

Your child’s name will be automatically added to the waiting list for any higher preference schools than the one offered.

Being on a waiting list does not mean that a place will become available.

More information about waiting lists will be available after National Offer Day.

After places are offered, you will have the right of appeal for any school you were refused a place at.

More information about appeals will be available after National Offer Day.

When to apply

Parents can apply for a place in the Autumn of the year before their child turns 4 years of age. It’s important that you apply for a place as soon as possible:

  • attendance at a nursery class doesn’t give a child automatic priority for a place
  • don’t wait until your child is 5 years old, or your preferred school may already be full

You can list up to 3 preferred schools when you apply.

If you wish to look around the school prior to making a decision on which school is best for your child then please contact the school office who will be happy to book an appointment for you.

Induction Meetings

Pupils who are due to join us at the beginning of the Academic Year, will be invited to an induction meeting during the Summer Term.

In-Year Admissions

We currently admit 60 pupils in Reception to Year 6. If you wish your child to move to Brookfields Primary in the middle of a school year then you must contact the school office on 0121 675 1897. Pupils who join at other times during the year will attend a meeting with Mrs Cross, Deputy Headteacher, where a start date will be agreed.

Secondary School Admissions (for Year 6 Pupils)

The closing date was midnight 31 October 2019.

No matter the circumstances all applications are now considered as late and will only be considered after the offer of places on 2 March 2020.

Offers will be sent by email on 2 March 2020 by 5:15pm.

You must accept or refuse the offers made by the deadline of 16 March 2020.

Waiting lists will be created three weeks following the offer of school places. Your child’s name will be automatically added to the waiting list for any higher preference schools than the one offered (unless your child did not achieve a high enough score in the grammar school selection test). Being on a waiting list does not mean that a place will become available.

Grammar schools

You can read more information about each of Birmingham’s grammar schools on the Grammar Schools in Birmingham website.

Only children born between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009 can take the entrance test in 2019 for entry in September 2020. If you would like your child to take an entry test you should speak to your child’s head teacher first.

Applying to sit an entry test is not the same as asking for a place at the school (an expression of preference). You must also complete the application form of your home local authority (the local authority where you pay your council tax).

Please note that children older than 11 years may not register for the tests, but parents or carers can still contact these schools about their admission arrangements outside the Year 7 transfer process.

Nursery Places

We currently offer Nursery places in September to pupils who are 3 years old by the 31st August. Please look at the following link to check your entitlement.

If you would like to apply for a Nursery place, please complete the appropriate application form at the school office.

Please note: Attendance at Nursery does not guarantee a place in Reception and parents must still apply by the LA closing dates as published on their website. Parents requiring assistance to apply for places should ask at the school office.
